Applying stress to a mind, body, belief system and/or democracy doesn’t always strengthen it. But we know for a fact the only way to strengthen a mind, body, belief system and democracy is to apply stress.
Honored to be highlighted by @TIME & @APA, amplifying the conversation on taming our inner critics. Thoughts are like a parade - constantly on the move. Each one so absorbed and sure of itself - often marching right off the path of truth. #InnerCriticWork#MentalHealthAwareness
Framing negative self-talk as “My inner critic says I’m lazy” instead of “I’m being lazy” creates a powerful distance that can make a world of difference, says @DrSullivanATL. https://t.co/WG3j6ex2Rf
Ohhh, I love this too... Regularly reflecting on the brevity of life helps me focus on scooping up tiny bits of joy. Just like an amuse-bouche, offered freely and unexpectedly, opportunities to remember this naked truth are sprinkled everywhere. Wonderful article @richardsima!
Very moved by all the #lovewhereyouworked posts today. Take care of yourself tweeps. @TeddyAmen wrote a story about the toll layoffs can take. https://t.co/1bw2P7r7vV
How can you take care of your mental health when you can’t find a therapist? @DrSullivanATL contributes to this list of helpful recommendations from psychologists and other experts. https://t.co/CFoTthqwXJ
@jessesingal CBT is great. While you wait, perhaps try light therapy to adjust your sleep-wake cycle. Basically, you buy a light box (10,000 lux) and wake up (very) early and sit in front of it for about 30-60 min. It was originally for seasonal depression, but it can help insomnia too.
@KimABowie Ha! I totally agree about the existential themes hidden in comics. They seem to slip under our defenses because of their simplicity. The Calvin in me wants to consult Google Scholar for the research to back up this idea. But the Hobbes in me wants to just play with this idea.
@taraparkerpope The wise part knows this is her path, she’s her own person, a parent’s job is to let go lovingly, etc. The human part is that some developmental milestones stink for parents!! They. Hurt. All we can do is allow the waves of emotion to move through us. Sending tissues & warm hugs.
@KimABowie Thank you! I love framing engaging w/it as questioning. We can miss the golden nugget (if it exists) by summarily dismissing it. But go around shame-filled and trapped if we take it in as an unquestionable truth. Glad it was helpful.
Thank you @AdvisoryBd and @daily_briefing for highlighting my article. As I mentioned, the pandemic amplified the inner critic for many people. Given how depleting & relentless it is, I suspect it's contributing to the massive healthcare worker burnout we’re witnessing.
A brilliant psychologist and dear friend of mine, Dr. Lakeasha Sullivan (@DrSullivanATL), wrote a phenomenal piece for the Washington Post on a topic many of us are painfully familiar with. Sharing her wisdom and clinical expertise with all who need it.
