@FixingEducation A partial reason for the high numbers in the 70s was the Viet Nam war. GIs went to college via GI Bill. Also it used to be a deferment if you were in college. I think the recent low numbers are due to culture wars, COVID and the cost of college versus the starting pay of teachers
