It’s field camp time.

This is the type area for the Mississippian Hinton Fm. The sinkhole is near the base of the 1100 ft exposure above the thick Stony Gap Sandstone. Mostly interfluvial redbeds, paleosols, incised fluvial channels and a few transgressive carbonates and marine-ish shales up section.

I present the now world famous #HintonSinkhole near the southern New River Gorge National Park. Media outlets like CNN reported it to be karst but it isn’t. This is tunnel collapse in artificial fill that buried a tributary to the New River.
