This time of year is PhD advisor selection time for many, so it’s a great time to remember that 5 years is a long time and no matter how cool the research, having a good PhD experience will be about finding a mentor whose approach fits your needs and lab where you feel supported.
Some reviewers approach a manuscript only focused on what they think is wrong.
Other reviewers approach a manuscript genuinely wanting to help the authors make it better.
Kindness and rigor do not have to be mutually exclusive.
The opposite of impostor syndrome and self-doubt doesn’t have to be arrogance.
You can recognize your qualifications while still seeing you have a lot to learn.
You can recognize that success will require hard work while still seeing you are capable of exceptional things.
We never outgrow the need for mentoring.
As we advance in our careers, the challenges we face tend to get more complex and the solutions less clear.
Reaching out to mentors for advice is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
I remember breaking down to my Ph.D. advisor about how stupid I felt while troubleshooting a problem in my project when she handed me this paper. Years later it is still relevant to young students starting off in Science. It's ok to feel stupid, we all do on a regular basis.
Whether it’s an application that’s not accepted or a grant that doesn’t score well, rejection can feel isolating. That’s because what we see is our failure and everyone else’s success.
Know that you are not alone. Every person who experiences success has also seen failure.
