You should know WAY more about your main character than you actually put on the page.

I know writers who write 10-page character profiles. And others who
interview their character like a journalist.

You don't necessarily need to do that, but you should know:

👉 The key experiences (highs & lows) that have led to their current situation
👉 What major relationships have shaped them (childhood + adult)
👉 Their most dearly held values
👉 Why they want what they want in the present

You won't be able to tell us their whole life story — otherwise the story would be too long. But you DO want to surface enough of it so the reader develops a fuller understanding of who your main character is and what drives them.

If all we see is the main character in the present, with no insight into their past, we're going to miss a huge part of what motivates them.
