The quickest way to waste an opening on immigration is to let the political fight become about something else.

The polling makes electoral risk of an abortion debate obvious, a Redbridge survey of 2,010 Australians, published in March 2026, found 62% supported abortion access, another 25% supported access only in limited circumstances, and just 8% opposed it.

More importantly for One Nation, the divide exists inside its own support base. Among its voters, 50% supported access and another 34% supported access in limited circumstances. Only 9% opposed it. That means 84% supported abortion access in at least some circumstances.

There is also a difference between what a proposal technically does and the political argument it creates. A narrowly framed restriction on sex-selective abortion may be defensible to its supporters on those specific grounds. But they cannot assume the public debate will remain confined to those grounds, especially when figures like Howe are associated with it.

When accusations of racism fail to persuade voters concerned about immigration, an argument about women’s rights offers another way to pull those voters back. Why make that argument easier? Why give people who are reconsidering their political loyalties a fresh reason to retreat to their old ones?

Even supporters of a narrow abortion reform should recognise the risk. If their proposal becomes associated with a complete ban, the broader controversy can swallow the reform itself.

None of this requires abandoning personal convictions. MPs can hold different views and exercise conscience votes, as they have in other parties. Every moral disagreement does not need to become a national platform or a test of whether someone belongs on the right.

If the objective is meaningful, lasting immigration reform, then protecting the coalition needed to deliver it should come first. That means keeping attention on immigration and resisting letting activists revive dead issues that divide its own supporters.

Political opportunities can disappear much faster than they arrive.

Don’t let them turn an opening on immigration into an election about abortion.
