@carebecc So fascinating to hear people say it's a comedy when I did not perceive nor feel that at all. I can see it though. I thought it played itself a bit serious and was very dark in its minimalism. That's why we love movies though! One of my favorites this year for sure!

Horror Fandom: Some Food For Thought -

I believe it would be a less toxic and more enjoyable place to be if these things could be more broadly understood. I'm speaking about horror fandom, but you could apply this to all fandom really.

1: One is not more of a "real" fan or less of a "real" fan than another simply because their passion for a particular movie or franchise may be different.

2. Age can play a huge part in our fandom.
For example, I'm 45. When I got into horror in the 80s, there was only 1 Freddy Krueger movie, 3 Jason movies, 2 Michael Myers movies and no such thing as Chucky.

My journey and experience as a horror fan and what I am willing to accept in terms of standards or expectations, can be very different from someone who is currently 25. I've seen horror evolve, grow and change over 40 years, as compared to someone whose experience with horror may only be 15 years.

This doesn't make me more of a fan or less of a fan (and vice versa) than someone much younger or much older. It just makes us different fans. Our journeys and our experiences with the genre will help to shape our passion, desires, and our standards and expectations, and what we're willing to accept and not accept.

3. And this is a big one...
Just because someone may rib on a movie they don't like (that you do like) doesn't mean they don't like YOU.

It's never easy to hear someone rib on (tease) or make fun of a movie you absolutely adore and love, but that doesn't mean it's personal. In other words, if I say I think (fill in the blank movie) is garbage, that doesn't mean I'm saying all those who DO like the movie are also garbage. This is, without a doubt, one of the biggest problematic issues in fandom. The lack of NUANCE.

However, I believe it's really a modern phenomenon in ONLINE fandom because of the difficulty of being able to decipher nuance, emotions and intent associated with text on a screen. And it's especially difficult for those who grew up in the digital era with social media and have no experience living in a world without it.

Growing up, I used to have all sorts of conversations with friends about the different movies we disagreed on. It was fun! We'd tease each other all the time. Not once did any of us take it personally or walk away thinking we hated each other. The difference? It was the 80s and 90s, and it was in-person conversations. There was no social media and therefore, no emotionless text on the screen, which would then present an opportunity to misinterpret tone and intent.

The lack of nuance, and the addition of so many ad hominem and strawman arguments that make their way into modern movie discussions is killing the fun! Very rarely is something black and white.

A 5 minute in-person discussion would likely change your opinion on most people you think you hate.
