"The first 90% of coding accounts for the first 90% of development time. The remaining 10% of coding accounts for the other 90% of development time." ๐
- So true!
It's pretty amazing what one solo developer can do with AI assistance!
In just 52 days, I've developed the code for an entire game using ~80 scripts that has menus, 4 selectable characters, 3 completed levels (I can make unlimited now!), collectibles, destructibles, interactables, environmentals, weather, lighting, 7 dynamically updated languages, a music and sound effect system, loot crates, traps, enemies, and dynamically built levels that are fully configurable using Json files! Everything was built to be easily expandable.
The only thing slowing me down now is the polishing phase! That's the last 10% ๐
Well, I finally settled on some character for my game.
It's a top-down game, so developing characters that look good from the top-down angle is extremely hard. But I have this new method where I just cut the head, arms and feet out and stack them on top of each other! And now, the animation sprite sheet is extremely small!
(These are still unpolished characters for my game)
I guess this is better... I had to move all of the character limbs a little more under the character and move the head forward. Still not good enough, but it's improved.
I'm developing a game, but I'm having trouble with animating a character in only 64x64 pixels from the top-down perspective.
Any professional artists with tips to make this look good?
I'm getting close to showing off some screenshots of my new dungeon crawler game!
It's still in super early alpha.
Most of the existing graphics are placeholders (or 'hooks' as we call them) until I have time to improve them. I may need to find a good artist eventually.
For now, strengthening the existing code and adding features is more important than improving the visual appeal of the game. And it's also where I do my best work.
Well, here is the HUD design I'm working on... It might be a little too dark for my taste. And I think I will change the clock to an orb instead of a silver plaque.
@NemraV1 Your game is looking great!
Building out dev tools is the key to fast iteration! Nicely done!
I'm about to develop a level designer for my game. It's going to be a huge endeavor, but it'll make developing 50-100 levels much faster than the time it'll take to develop the tool!
@NarrisBunnies "it's hard to communicate the topic honestly" - I totally get that. It's almost like you have to explain the entire thing just to make one thing make sense.
I'm over here developing 2 games at the same time, and I have literally ZERO friends that code!
It's not easy to remain enthusiastic when none of my friends can stand to listen to me talk about my projects.
Are there any solo-developers out there that can relate?
@RobSchneider Hi Rob!
This is definitely off topic. But I just watched Big Stan for the first time and it was hilarious!
I don't know how I missed that one. It reminded me of the good old days when comedy movies were funny! ๐๐
Thanks for the laughs!
