🗣️ Rio Ferdinand: “Enzo is a beautiful footballer. He’s talented, he’s got energy, and the same goes for Julián Álvarez. But there’s something about modern football that bothers me. You cannot sign a massive contract, commit yourself to a club and then, a few years later, decide you want to force your way out while expecting that club to simply let you go for cheap.

“I watched Julián walk off after Atlético’s game and get booed by his own supporters. Then last night I watched Enzo walk off after Chelsea’s win over Fulham and get booed as well. You cannot expect supporters to be happy when they feel a player has turned his back on the club that invested so heavily in him.

“And then you hear Enzo wants Real Madrid and Julián wants Barcelona. But those clubs were there before you signed your contracts! Nobody forced you to choose Chelsea or Atlético. You made that decision. So if you commit to a club, you have to respect that commitment.

“During our time under Sir Alex Ferguson, things were very different. If he felt you weren’t committed, he’d tell you straight: ‘You’re leaving this club.’ And he’d go straight to the board and make it happen. We saw it with players like David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam. The manager protected the culture of the football club.

“Footballers have every right to want a new challenge, but there’s a proper way to do it. Don’t sign the contract, take the love from the supporters and then disrespect the club when another giant comes calling. If you want to leave, be honest, handle it professionally and leave with your head held high.”
