Wonderful, breaking news!
Early this morning, ex-orphan Melia returned to introduce a brand new baby girl to Head Keeper Benjamin and the rest of the Ithumba team.
Moon, as we’ve named her, is Melia’s second baby. She is a lovely little elephant, bold and brimming with character.
More to come, but we wanted to share the news in real time. Supporters like you make these stories possible: enabling us to rescue orphans like Melia, dedicate years to their recovery, and help them reclaim their place in the wild – paving the way for a new generation of wild elephants, like baby Moon.

Hands up anyone who's a grandparent? So are we. To 92 elephant calves.
How? We've pioneered the rescue and reintegration of orphaned elephants – and our approach has been so successful, they've been fully accepted by wild herds, not to mention a number of wild bulls. Now we're watching family trees unfold before our very eyes – and since the door back home is always left open to any orphan that leaves our care, we get to witness playtimes like this all the time.

Meet Wangalla.
She is the most enchanting little elephant – bright, curious, and brimming with character. Rescued as a newborn, she was found amongst a herd of zebras and has now been adopted by our resident flock of birds. She is but one of the many tiny elephants saved by ‘Misheck’s magic,’ the care of one of our most gifted Keepers.

She collapsed the day she was found. Four weeks old, riddled with parasites and fading fast.
But today, Kipekee turns one. Her name means 'unique' in Swahili – and she has more than lived up to her name. In this video, taken just a month after her rescue, she was already fighting her way back to life.
Now she's the Nursery darling, constantly surrounded by adoring nannies jockeying for her attention. Muridjo, Kerrio, and Nyambeni all competed for custody. Even junior girls Wamata and Talek stepped up as big sisters.
Join us in wishing a happy first birthday to Kipekee.
