Dr. Russell Barkley explained the genetics of ADHD in a way that finally clicked.

Scientists have identified 20–25 gene sites linked to the disorder, with several regulating dopamine in the brain.

In ADHD, nerve cells often have 30–80% more “vacuum cleaners” (dopamine reuptake transporters) that suck the chemical back up too quickly, leaving too little available.

That’s why stimulants like Ritalin work: they literally block those pumps, leaving more dopamine in the synapse.

Barkley called this a form of genetic treatment, not just a Band-Aid, and predicted that in the near future we may use simple saliva tests to predict which medication will work best for each person.
