"Pra mim era tudo escuridão e desespero. Eu estava cansado de lutar. Estava cansado de ficar cansado. Eu queria me livrar de tanto sofrimento que eu nem entendia de onde vinha. Tinha noite que eu bebia 3 garrafas de vinho. Treinei bêbado várias vezes e fiquei outras tantas internado, tomando soro, porque eu não me alimentava, só ingeria álcool."

"Um dia eu abri a janela do apartamento com vista espetacular e só não me joguei porque a minha esposa foi mais rápida. Ela me puxou pra dentro e a gente ficou um tempão chorando abraçado ali no chão da sala, sabendo que não era o fim — nem o meu, nem o do meu sofrimento."

"Chegar num estado de degradação mental em que você se anula a ponto de desejar morrer é um processo violento e complicado de sair. Traz muita dor pra você, pra quem você ama e praqueles que te amam. Ninguém sai disso sozinho. Precisa pedir ajuda e acreditar nas palavras do Luís Castro: 'Sempre haverá estrelas iluminando o céu'. Eu sei que não é fácil, mas, por favor, acredite e peça ajuda. A vida não desiste da gente. Ela insiste."

"Uma vez eu peguei a chave do carro e saí correndo... Não me importava o destino, desde que ele fosse o fim. Daí toca o meu celular. Era minha irmã mais nova. Já atendi chorando: 'Eu não aguento mais, eu não aguento mais, eu não aguento mais. Me ajuda, pelo amor de Deus! Eu quero me matar. Eu preciso me matar'. Ela tinha me ligado pra dividir comigo a notícia mais feliz da vida dela: ela ia ser mãe... Nós conversamos bastante, a minha irmã disse que o bebê ia precisar de um tio craque que ensinasse ele ou ela a jogar bola. Isso me comoveu muito e me trouxe uma felicidade momentânea, que não foi suficiente para silenciar aquele impulso de morte na minha cabeça."

"Assim que desliguei o celular, eu desejei ir à ponte Hudariyat. E se eu me jogar dali? É isso. Eu vou me jogar dessa ponte. Pronto. Acabou. Dei a partida e o carro não pegou. Tentei de novo. Nada. Passei uns 10 minutos tentando fazer o carro funcionar e não conseguia. Insisti de todas as formas, mas não pegava. Parecia que tinha algo me travando. Até que minha esposa aparece, abre a porta do carro e me dá um abraço."

"Naquela altura, eu já tinha prometido à minha esposa e a mim mesmo que não voltaria de jeito nenhum para a Arábia e não cumpriria o restante do contrato no Al-Hilal. Mas aí a Seleção Brasileira foi fazer um amistoso contra Senegal em Alvalade, no estádio do Sporting. Eu estava de bobeira e fui assistir. De repente, sentado na arquibancada, eu me pego emocionado. Sinto meu coração bater diferente. Comecei a fantasiar que o treinador ia me chamar e eu ia entrar em campo pra ajudar a Seleção."

"Me deixei levar por esses pensamentos e fui parar na minha Belo Horizonte da infância, quando a vida era mais difícil, mas menos complicada. Estava toda a família junta, unida, como sempre fomos antes de partir para Portugal. Parecia um sentimento tão simples e tão genuíno, que nesse dia eu entendi: as melhores coisas da vida são as mais simples, as mais autênticas."
