It's the same reason some Queers for Palestine activists end up defending Hamas. The movement offers both a powerful sense of belonging and the moral satisfaction of believing they're fighting for the oppressed. My view is that this often reflects a deeper, subconscious rebellion against authority that traces back to their first encounters with it—their parents.
