LEGENDS OF POLK’S PAST: Jonathan Bermudez, P (Baseball)
A transfer from Miami Dade College, Jonathan Bermudez spent just one season at Polk State College but shined in that season, helping the Eagles win a third straight Suncoast Conference championship. During his lone season at Polk State in 2016, Bermudez earned second-team All-Suncoast Conference honors, compiling a 5-1 record, 4.06 ERA, and team-leading 62 strikeouts.
After a brief stint at St. Leo University, Bermudez concluded his collegiate career at NAIA Southeastern University in Lakeland. In 2018, Bermudez was named Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year. Bermudez compiled a 15-2 record, 1.95 ERA, and 153 strikeouts in 110.2 innings of work. He helped the Fire win their first NAIA national championship.
Drafted in the 23rd round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, Bermudez has worked his way up through the ranks in the minor leagues, playing in the Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, and currently the Miami Marlins organization. Houston’s 2021 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Bermudez represented his native Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
