SIR – Congratulations to Allison Pearson for her article on hospital waiting lists (Comment, February 11).

I am a senior GP who came out of retirement to support the NHS during the pandemic. Since then I have continued to work two days a week.

I see about 64 patients each week, many with complex medical problems that require specialist referral. Often they have had to wait between four and six months before being seen. Patients whom I referred last October tell me that they only have an appointment booked for July. Others inform me that their appointments have been cancelled, and they are either waiting for a new appointment or have been given another months away.

I can see no evidence of any reductions in waiting times. I actually breathe a sigh of relief when a patient tells me that they have private health insurance, as I then know they will be seen speedily. I often tell patients that I feel ashamed of the NHS.
