U-Turn Basics: How to Safely Make a U-Turn
Making a U-turn safely takes control, awareness, and enough space to complete the turn.
Once you are ready to go, keep checking your surroundings, move at a controlled speed, and turn smoothly without rushing.
Not every right turn is as simple as it looks. Sometimes a parked car, traffic, or another road condition means you need to adjust before you turn.
This is a good example of why it’s important to look ahead, slow down, and give yourself enough room to make the turn safely.
When road conditions change, give yourself more time to react, keep a safe following distance, and drive with extra care.
Never drive through water-covered roads if you cannot tell how deep the water is. It is always safer to turn around and find another route.
Backup cameras are helpful, but they should not be the only thing you rely on.
When backing out of a parking spot, look around your vehicle, check for pedestrians and cars moving through the lot, and keep looking as you slowly leave the space.

A safe U-turn starts before you actually turn.
Signal, slow down, get into the correct position, and check your surroundings before you go.
Taking a moment to double-check your mirrors and look over your shoulder can help you start the turn safely.

Cars give you clues before they move. A vehicle’s position, signal, wheels, and movement can help you anticipate what another driver may do next.
This behind the scenes moment from instructor training explains why staying aware of the cars around you matters.

Instructor Micah is breaking down how to make a smooth right turn on a residential street.
Before turning, slow down, use the SMOG method, and check your surroundings. As you turn into the new street, keep the car steady, stay in your lane, and make sure your path is clear.
Pedestrian safety is an important part of sharing the road. When turning, approaching a crosswalk, or driving through areas where people may be walking, take a moment to look carefully and be ready to yield.
A little extra caution can help keep everyone safer on the road.
A big congratulations to Jim, Hibst, peanutcandydoodles, and Dark on passing your tests! 🎉👏 We hope you’re enjoying this accomplishment.
Sending lots of good luck to Miles, Landon, Demiangel, Lina, Arjean, and Ashlyn. Hope everything goes smoothly!

Left turns can feel like a lot at first, but breaking them down into simple steps can help.
Signal, check your surroundings, get into position, and make sure your path is clear before you go. Once you know the steps, left turns can feel easier to manage.

Sun glare can make it harder to see the road, other vehicles, traffic signals, and pedestrians, especially during morning and evening drives.
When visibility is limited, drive with extra caution, keep a safe following distance, and take a moment to look carefully before moving.
Turning around in a cul-de-sac may seem simple, but control still matters.
Take your time, watch your surroundings, and be mindful of parked cars, driveways, pedestrians, and the curb as you turn.
A slow, careful turn can help you use the space safely.
