When I was living in Barkley estate at Abule Egba, instead of throwing the bottled-water cans and takeaway packs I used throughout the week into the bin, I would separate them and leave them somewhere the woman who worked as our janitor could easily pick them up.

I started doing this after I noticed that she was always dipping her hands into the waste bin in search of these items.

I moved out in 2023 to Ikeja, and last week, I got a call from my former landlord telling me that I had a gift. The same woman who worked as the janitor had just returned from the UK, where she had gone to help care for her daughter's baby.

The gifts includes 10 T-shirts, two boxed Adidas sneakers, an original Manchester United jersey, and a sports wristwatch.

I asked my former landlord why she chose to send me all these gifts, because I wasn't even sure I had ever had a proper conversation with her during my stay there.

He told me that she had shared a testimony with him: the waste cans I used to leave at my entrance were what she used to help pay her daughter's university fees from 100 level through 400 level at IMSU. After her daughter graduated, she later won a partial scholarship to the UK for her master's degree.

All this time, I had no idea that the little waste cans I considered trivial could help pave a future for someone.

Never underestimate the impact of a small kindness; what costs you almost nothing may mean everything to someone else.
