Rocky 50th Anniversary Fact of the Day: Joe Sorbello

Before Sylvester Stallone moved out to California in 1974, he was a struggling New York-based actor. One of his closest friends was Joe Spinell (whom Sly called "Joey Chuckles"). He was also friendly with actor Joe Sorbello.

When it came time to cast "Rocky" in 1975, Sorbello got the small part of Buddy: Mr. Gazzo's miserable driver/bodyguard who hates Rocky for no particular reason. During his career, Sorbello (1932-2011) mostly played supporting roles and bit parts as gangsters, cops, etc.

Buddy had a slightly bigger role in earlier drafts of the Rocky screenplay vs. the final film.

1) There's a violent payoff to his rivalry with Rocky. After dropping Rocky off at his apartment (Thanksgiving morning), the same argument ensues that appears in the final film. Rather that Buddy driving off and Rocky yelling "Get out of that car!", Gazzo tells them to settle their differences once and for all. Rocky repeatedly slams Buddy's head into the steering wheel, causing the car horn to honk repeatedly.

2) Buddy roots for Creed to destroy Rocky in their title fight. However, Buddy is quite racist (as are Mickey, Gazzo, and Andy the bartender). He never refers to Creed by name; only as "the n-".
