Can the rather unique drivers of today’s #tanker demand meet the challenge of rapidly expanding shipbuilding capacity?

Chinese #ironore imports continue to grow even as domestic steel output weakens, driving port inventories toward record highs.

Signal Ocean: “• Global #ironore flows in May 2026 were down 2% y/y.
• Flows to #China increased by 3% y/y.
• Flows destined to ports outside of China fell by 15% y/y.
• Iron ore flows from Guinea reached 2.1mt in May as Simandou continued to ramp up.”

Pareto: “VLCCs holding well in the Atlantic, with also more AG-fixtures emerging. We continue to see the segment in better shape than the smaller ones, where demand destruction is taking its toll.”

Fearnleys: “A noticeably quiet week for #VLCCs, shaped by industry participants’ temporary migration to Greece for Posidonia. Activity has slowed, position lists fairly balanced, but ships disappearing quietly with no details. Prompt cargoes in the Middle East showing signs of paying extra, but a slightly softer feel in the Atlantic with USG/East holding for above 16 million for the time being.”

ANZ: “The US strategic petroleum reserve continues to release record amounts to the global oil market. Another 7,993kbbls was drawdown last week, representing a run rate of 1.15mb/d. This brings the SPR to only 357mbbls, just above levels not seen since 1984.”

Odd thought: maybe a long term hit in oil supply as a result of the Hormuz crisis is needed to balance a gradually declining real demand given that China’s demand growth ended up being all inventory builds.
With the situation in the Middle East still uncertain and no meaningful progress towards de-escalation, persistent disruptions to oil and LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz are reinforcing thermal #coal’s role among Asian importers as an alternative source of power generation.

#Geopolitical shocks and trade fragmentation and refinery-production relocations have lengthened #tanker voyages, and increased #freight volatility.
