International labor law makes clear that workers, regardless of their classification as “independent contractors,” are entitled to basic rights and protections. The International Labour Organization (ILO) affirms that anyone performing work under the direction or control of a company, on a regular basis, should not be denied fair wages, safe working conditions, and the right to organize.

Exploitation through fares below cost, high commissions, and restrictive controls violates these principles. Drivers are the backbone of these platforms, and yet the system rewards corporations while those who create value are left struggling. This is a moral and legal failure.

The ILO also guarantees the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining. Our union, the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, has every right to organize, negotiate, and take responsible, peaceful collective action to demand fairness. Any attempts to silence us, block our accounts, or retaliate against drivers for seeking justice are inconsistent with international labor standards.

Furthermore, corporate social responsibility is not optional. Uber, Bolt, and InDrive have a duty to respect human rights, ensure decent working conditions, and prevent exploitation. Profits built on the suffering of workers are not sustainable, and the public must recognize that fairness in the gig economy is not just a driver issue it is a societal issue.
