The biggest issue in recruiting isn't what most people think.
A recent text from a Power 4 Recruiting Coordinator:
"About 60% of the time when I'm at a game and ask for a roster, either the travel coach doesn't have one or it isn't updated.
So when I see a player I like, I sometimes have no idea who he is."
Let that sink in.
- Parents worry about showcases.
- Players worry about social media.
- Everyone worries about playing in the biggest tournaments.
Meanwhile, one of the most basic parts of recruiting is often getting overlooked:
Having an accurate, updated roster available for college coaches.
If a coach can't identify a player, it's hard for that player to get recruited.
To be fair, this isn't meant as a shot at travel coaches.
Many do an outstanding job.
Most are juggling practices, games, travel, administration, communication, and a hundred other responsibilities while getting paid far less than people realize.
But it's a reminder that recruiting often comes down to fundamentals.
*An updated roster.
*Correct contact information.
*Accurate graduation year.
*Jersey numbers that match.
Simple things.
If you're a parent or player, don't assume someone else is handling it.
Offer to help.
Ask to review the roster before events.
Make sure your information is correct.
Because sometimes the difference between being seen and being overlooked isn't talent.
It's whether the coach knows who you are.
I'm fortunate that I'm not tied to a travel organization, showcase company, or college program.
I get to sit in the middle and hear what everyone is saying.
And this issue comes up far more often than most people realize.
I created a free roster template that you can just copy and use below.
We are excited for another action-packed season on the road and at Young Field. Check out our 2026 Patriots roster and schedule. #RollPats#WestFargoBaseball
JJ McMenamy (2029, SS/2B, West Fargo Sheyenne) sits on this SL for a double down the line.
Impressive freshman, advanced actions defensively.
