Amadiọha, also known as Kamanu or Ofufe, is a prominent deity in present-day Rivers State, Nigeria, with its physical headquarters traditionally located in Ozuzu, a town in the Etche district.
Amadiọha is a fearsome yet just deity who upholds the ethics and moral order of society. Cases are brought to his shrines, scattered throughout southern Igboland, and he delivers fair judgments, never inflicting pain or suffering on the innocent. Punishments for wrongdoers often manifest as lightning strikes (amụma eluigwe) or sudden deaths (ọnwụ ike).
In the event of communal disasters such as floods, famines, or plagues, it is believed that the community's sins have incurred Amadiọha’s wrath. Diviners are summoned to perform cleansing rituals and sacrifices, practices that are often costly and demanding to appease the deity and restore harmony.
Amadiọha, the god of thunder and lightning, is one of the most feared and widely venerated deities in Igboland. Certain animals are sacred to Amadiọha and are considered his property; harming, killing, or consuming them is strictly forbidden. Among these sacred animals are the cow (Ehi) and the ram (Ebulu).
Beyond justice, Amadiọha is also associated with love, peace, and unity. He is recognized as a creator god, oracle, and consort to Ani. His name is invoked in oaths across Igboland, which carry death penalties if broken. A common expression among the Igbo is: "Chi m le kwee – ọ bụ na ọ mu mere ihe a, Amadiọha magbukwe m" (My god, please see; if it is true that I did this, let Amadiọha strike me dead), or simply, "Amadiọha tigbuo gi" (May Amadiọha kill you).
Amadiọha communicates through thunder and strikes with lightning. Astrologically, his governing planet is the Sun, his color is red, and his symbol is the white ram. Metaphysically, he represents the collective will of the people. His sacred day is Afọr, the third day in the Igbo four-day market week. The End.
