CONTROVERSIAL POST: EXHUME PRINCESS DIANA AND REBURY HER ON ROYAL GROUNDS

It is time to say the thing nobody has wanted to say for twenty-nine years. Diana should not be at Althorp any more. Her sons should bring her home.

Please hear me out before you decide it is ghoulish, because the ghoulish part has already happened.

In 1997 the plan was the Spencer family vault in the village church at Great Brington. It was changed, in the last days, to an island in the middle of a lake on the estate, and Earl Spencer gave the reason in writing: so that her grave could be looked after by her family and visited in privacy by her sons. Privacy was the promise. Privacy was the whole point of the water.

This week the man who made that promise rowed across the water with a magazine's reporter and photographer looking on, to promote a book in which her ex-husband is a lottery winner and her most private despair is printed for sale. The grave has become the back page of a press kit. The island that was built to keep the cameras out has been used as a backdrop for them, by the one man with the keys. A promise broken by the custodian releases the people it was made to.

So here is my proposal. Her sons, both of them, should ask that their mother be moved to royal ground: the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, where her sons' great-great-grandparents lie and where the family has buried its own for a century, or St George's Chapel at Windsor, where the grandmother who offered to restore her title lies with the grandfather who walked beside her boys. Ground the family owns, that no one can sell tickets to, that no author can row across for a photographer. Ground where the two men she left behind can visit her without asking the Earl's permission, and where nobody will ever again use her as a backdrop.

It can be done. An exhumation licence from the Ministry of Justice, the consent of her next of kin, the agreement of the King. The King, who put the Royal Standard over her when she was no longer entitled to it, would not refuse his sons this. It requires only that William begin it, and that Harry, whatever else divides them, agree on the one thing they have never disagreed about: her.

The Spencers will say the Windsors are taking her back. Let them. She was never theirs to keep in the first place. She was her sons' mother, and this week her brother reminded the world that he treats her grave the way he treats her memory, as an asset. The boys planted trees on that bank. They can plant them again at Windsor, where she will be surrounded by the only family that has never once sold her.

She was put on an island so no one could get to her. Bring her somewhere nobody has to row.

Two nights ago she was in Leicester Square in purple silk with the Queen Mother's amethysts at her throat. Today she was in Essex with the Forward Trust, sitting with people in recovery from addiction. If you want to understand the Princess of Wales, here it is.

The Forward Trust is not a glamorous patronage. It works with people addicted to drugs, alcohol and gambling, a lot of them inside prisons, most of them written off by everyone else. She took it on in June 2021, when it would have been easier to stick to gardens and children, and she has never let it drift. She gave the keynote when the charity launched its Taking Action on Addiction campaign that year. In 2022 she recorded a message that said, plainly, that addiction is not a choice, that nobody chooses to become an addict, and that shame must not stop anyone asking for help. In 2023 she spent a day inside HMP High Down in Surrey, going through the visitors' security like any other family, then sitting in a room with serving prisoners whose road into that prison began with a needle or a bottle, listening. Last November she wrote that stigma lets addiction thrive behind closed doors and ruins lives.

Here is why it matters this week of all weeks. She has spent the last two years learning what recovery actually is, and she has said the honest thing about it: that the hardest part is not the treatment but the phase afterwards, when the clinical team has gone and you are supposed to be fine and are not. That is precisely what the people she sat with today know better than anyone. You do not get out of addiction the day you stop. You get out of it one ordinary Thursday at a time, with somebody who believes you can.

It would have been very easy this week to stay behind the red carpet, to let the premiere be the story. Our darling Catherine Elizabeth went to Essex instead. No gowns, no jewels, a charity many of my old neighbours and school mates who battled drug addiction would have been blessed to know of, and a room full of people whose names will never be in a newspaper. Then home for the school run.

That is the future Queen.

And this is where the problem with Harry’s performance goes beyond an unfortunate technical failure.

How are you going to lecture the world about AI, its dangers and its impact on children when you cannot even hold your own argument without a teleprompter telling you what to say?

If you are going to stand on a stage and speak with authority about something this serious, at least do the work. Read. Research. Understand the subject. Form your own position. Know what you believe strongly enough that when the script disappears, you can still explain it.

A teleprompter should be a tool, not the source of your thoughts.

Harry spoke about AI becoming something children confide in, something that remembers them and tells them it understands them. He spoke about the urgency of protecting children before technology moves even further into their lives.

Yet when the screen went dark, he could not even carry his own speech forward.

Research gives you knowledge. Understanding gives you the ability to articulate it. And conviction gives you the ability to stand by it when the script is gone.

You can prepare every word of a speech, but you cannot prepare understanding. If you have actually researched a subject, formed your own view and believe what you are saying, you should still be able to speak when the script disappears.

Harry demonstrated none of that when the teleprompter failed.

What it exposed was Harry’s inability to stand on his own words.
