New estimates suggest that Steam now has over 200 million monthly active users, making Valve’s PC gaming platform more than 50% larger than PlayStation.
The estimate comes from GameDiscoverCo, which combined Valve’s Digital Services Act data for Europe with Steam’s public network traffic data to estimate the platform’s global audience.
Based on those estimates, Steam reached around 198 million monthly active users in late 2025 and has likely surpassed 200 million since then.
For comparison, Sony recently reported that PlayStation had 125 million monthly active users as of March 2026.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney believes AI could have helped Destiny stay profitable after a report said the game’s biggest problem was the high cost of producing a constant stream of new content.
“If only some sort of newfangled technology could come along and make it possible to overcome bullet point #1 and enable games like Destiny to thrive!”
The report said Destiny was only occasionally profitable because Bungie had to keep making new content to retain players, which was very expensive. Sweeney believes AI could ease that process for live-service games in the future.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says Steam is missing out on millions of PC players because it doesn’t have games like Fortnite, Riot Games titles, or Genshin Impact.
Sweeney said Valve has “a nice thing going on on PC,” but added that Steam is “missing out on a lot of opportunity” by not having those games available on the platform.
Sweeney also said Epic wants to work with Valve in the future, explaining, “We would love to interoperate with every company willing and to connect all the gamers.”
