How do you fit modern functionality in to a heritage restoration?
With clever disguise!
We used remaining woold and roof tiles from the barn restoration to create a building to contain our propane tank!

We hosted our Irish Pioneer Harvest Festival! The event was a success with historical groups, local politicians, & friends came to share in the day…and of course, the potato harvest! Our favourite Irish folk group played traditional Irish music and the Irish dancers entertained!
Today is #NationalVinegarDay! 🫙 🫙
For pioneers, vinegar was an incredibly valuable and versatile item. Not only was it used for cooking and preserving food, but it also served as a cleaning agent, a medicine, and a means to keep insects at bay.

In light of the Halloween holiday, we wanted to share one of the pumpkins we grew on the Duffy Homestead this year! 🎃
This is our first year growing pumpkins - and it is something we intend to keep working at each year.

Did you know that Halloween actually originated in Ireland? That’s right! The festival traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago! 🎃
Oct is #FirePreventionMonth. Before fire services, pioneers would need to take prevention into their own hands. When a fire did occur on the farmland, some pioneers would actually set count-fires, effectively “chocking out” the larger fire’s oxygen supply.

Dumplings…
A dumpling is made of pieces of dough wrapped around a sweet or savoury filling of your choice.
The most common types of dumplings have been steamed or fried but baking, simmering, and boiling are also options.

Did you know about this common English word that came from the Irish language?
The Irish language is responsible for many everyday words, such as…
“You dig?”
The jazz slang about being hip to the groove comes from the Irish “tuig” as in “an dtuigeann tu?”

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
