আজ বাংলার ইতিহাসের এক গৌরবময় দিন। আজ জন্মজয়ন্তী সেই মহামানবের, যিনি তাঁর অসাধারণ মেধা, অদম্য সাহস, আপসহীন ন্যায়বোধ এবং দূরদর্শী শিক্ষানীতির মাধ্যমে বাংলা তথা সমগ্র ভারতের নবজাগরণের ইতিহাসে অমর হয়ে আছেন। তিনি স্যার আশুতোষ মুখোপাধ্যায় —যাঁকে বাঙালি চিরকাল শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে স্মরণ করে “বাংলার বাঘ” নামে।

স্যার আশুতোষ মুখোপাধ্যায় ছিলেন একাধারে বিচারপতি, শিক্ষাবিদ, গণিতজ্ঞ, সমাজচিন্তক এবং সর্বোপরি জাতি গঠনের এক অনন্য কারিগর। তাঁর দৃঢ় ব্যক্তিত্ব ও আপসহীন মনোভাবের কাছে ব্রিটিশ শাসকরাও বহুবার নতি স্বীকার করতে বাধ্য হয়েছিল। তিনি বিশ্বাস করতেন, একটি জাতির প্রকৃত শক্তি নিহিত থাকে তার শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতি, বিজ্ঞানচর্চা এবং আত্মমর্যাদাবোধে।

কোলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় -এর উপাচার্য হিসেবে তিনি যে যুগান্তকারী পরিবর্তনের সূচনা করেছিলেন, তা ভারতীয় উচ্চশিক্ষার ইতিহাসে এক নতুন অধ্যায়ের সূচনা করে। তাঁর উদ্যোগে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে বিজ্ঞান শিক্ষা, গবেষণা এবং ভারতীয় ভাষার মর্যাদা বহুগুণ বৃদ্ধি পায়। তিনি অসংখ্য প্রতিভাবান ছাত্র, শিক্ষক ও গবেষককে সুযোগ করে দিয়েছিলেন, যাঁদের অনেকেই পরবর্তীকালে বিশ্বজোড়া খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন। তাঁর দূরদর্শিতা না থাকলে বাংলার নবজাগরণের বহু উজ্জ্বল নক্ষত্র হয়তো তাঁদের প্রাপ্য বিকাশের সুযোগই পেতেন না।

জাতীয়তাবাদী চেতনার প্রতিও তাঁর গভীর শ্রদ্ধা ছিল। ওটেন-ঘটনার পর যখন তরুণ নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসু প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজ থেকে বহিষ্কৃত হন, তখন স্যার আশুতোষ তাঁর মেধা ও ভবিষ্যতের মূল্য উপলব্ধি করে তাঁকে উচ্চশিক্ষার পথ থেকে বিচ্যুত হতে দেননি। এই মানবিক ও দূরদর্শী সিদ্ধান্তের মধ্যেই প্রতিফলিত হয়েছিল একজন প্রকৃত শিক্ষাগুরুর মহত্ত্ব। তিনি জানতেন, প্রতিভাকে দমন নয়—লালন করতে হয়।

তিনি শুধু একজন প্রশাসক ছিলেন না; তিনি ছিলেন বাঙালির আত্মবিশ্বাসের প্রতীক। তিনি প্রমাণ করেছিলেন, জ্ঞান, চরিত্র, আত্মসম্মান এবং কর্মনিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে একজন ভারতীয়ও বিশ্বের সর্বোচ্চ মর্যাদা অর্জন করতে পারে। তাঁর কর্ম, আদর্শ ও চিন্তাধারা আজও আমাদের পথ দেখায়।

আজকের দিনে, যখন শিক্ষা, গবেষণা, নৈতিকতা এবং মূল্যবোধের গুরুত্ব নতুন করে উপলব্ধি করার সময় এসেছে, তখন স্যার আশুতোষ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের জীবন আমাদের সামনে এক উজ্জ্বল আলোকবর্তিকা হয়ে রয়েছে। তাঁর উত্তরাধিকার কেবল ইতিহাসের পাতায় সীমাবদ্ধ নয়; তা আজও প্রতিটি শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান, প্রতিটি ছাত্র-শিক্ষক এবং প্রতিটি সচেতন ভারতীয়ের প্রেরণার উৎস।

বাংলা ও বাঙালির আত্মমর্যাদা, জ্ঞানচর্চা এবং জাতীয় চেতনাকে যিনি আজীবন সমুন্নত রেখেছিলেন, সেই মহান মনীষীর জন্মজয়ন্তীতে আমি তাঁকে জানাই গভীর শ্রদ্ধা ও বিনম্র প্রণাম।

আজ, ২৭শে জুন। জন্মেছিলেন ১৯৩৯ সালের এই দিনেই। আর আমাদের ছেড়ে চলে গিয়েছিলেন ১৯৯৪ সালের ৪ঠা জানুয়ারি। মাত্র চুয়ান্ন বছর ছয় মাসের জীবনে তিনি ভারতীয় চলচ্চিত্র সঙ্গীতকে এমন এক উচ্চতায় পৌঁছে দিয়েছেন, যা যুগের পর যুগ ধরে শ্রোতাদের মুগ্ধ করে চলেছে।

হ্যাঁ, আমি বলছি কিংবদন্তি সুরকার রাহুল দেব বর্মণ (আর. ডি. বর্মণ)-এর কথা।

বিশ্ববিখ্যাত সঙ্গীতকার সচিন দেব বর্মণের পুত্র হয়েও তিনি নিজের প্রতিভা, মৌলিকতা এবং অসাধারণ সুরসৃষ্টির মাধ্যমে গড়ে তুলেছিলেন এক সম্পূর্ণ স্বতন্ত্র পরিচয়। তাঁর সুর ছাড়া কিশোর কুমারের কণ্ঠকে আমরা হয়তো এত বৈচিত্র্যময় রূপে পেতাম না। রাজেশ খান্নার অগণিত কালজয়ী গান, অমিতাভ বচ্চন, দেব আনন্দ, মিঠুন চক্রবর্তীসহ বহু তারকার ছবির অসংখ্য স্মরণীয় সুর আজও আমাদের হৃদয়ে অম্লান—যার পেছনে রয়েছে আর. ডি. বর্মণের অনন্য সৃষ্টিশীলতা।

ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে তিনি হয়তো অনেক দুঃখ-কষ্টের মধ্য দিয়ে গিয়েছেন, কিন্তু শিল্পী হিসেবে তিনি ছিলেন অনন্য, অদ্বিতীয়। ত্রিপুরার বাঙালি পরিবারের সন্তান হয়ে তিনি শুধু মুম্বাই নয়, সমগ্র ভারতবর্ষের সঙ্গীতজগৎকে শাসন করেছেন তাঁর প্রতিভা দিয়ে। আজও বিশ্বের সর্বকালের শ্রেষ্ঠ সঙ্গীত পরিচালকদের তালিকা তৈরি হলে, রাহুল দেব বর্মণের নাম অত্যন্ত শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে উচ্চারিত হবে।

আজ তাঁর জন্মজয়ন্তীতে এই মহান শিল্পীকে জানাই আমার আন্তরিক শ্রদ্ধা, কৃতজ্ঞতা ও শত-শত প্রণাম।

And these are just reported numbers, the real numbers are far worse.

Yet one woman who kills her fiancé gets more airtime than all of them combined.

It makes sense, in the ugliest way. News runs on the rare, never the routine.

A snake bites, a snake kills. No one calls it news. It's the nature of the snake. Venom is what he's for.

But let a human bite the snake? Now that's a story. Now everyone gathers round.
