I wish racial justice was given the same respect as any other complex field. One of the biggest issues with forming endless DEI committees is that people think they can "good intention" their way through this work rather than prioritize years of extensive self education first. 1/
Happy #LGBTQSTEMDay! I’m Ray, an Indigiqueer developmental biologist that works with sea urchins! With the overlap of this day with Native American Heritage Month, I want to emphasize what can be done to support and center TwoSpirit, Indigiqueer, Native LGBTQIA+ peoples in STEM:
Yesterday's retreat: our committee discussed inclusion, diversity, equity, and antiracism topics close to our hearts. We also had a show-and-tell to get to know each other more deeply over Dame's Chicken & Waffles. How nourishing!

one way to value DEI contributions would be to let graduate students, who are putting an enormous amount of effort into making STEM more equitable and inclusive, include that work as a core dissertation chapter. it’s publishable & should be cited just like the rest of their work
Thoughts on how applying to grad school in the sciences is gatekeeping at its finest:
1) Why are grad school apps so expensive? ~$100 per app! Who can afford this as an undergrad/post-grad student.
Imagine applying to 10 programs, that's 1k (excluding GRE/TOEFL costs)! /1
The news broke as I was walking to the lab for my shift. My timeline was filled with the news. Group chats are mourning. Personal conversations expressing frustration & anger. But these cells in the incubator though
