Complete & utter disregard & disrespect for hospitality in a single photo. Whilst a battered & scapegoated sector struggles on with staff forced to wear face masks & customers only allowed to be served outside the PM swans into a pub & shows rules simply don’t apply to him.
@UKHospKate March 2020 - we had two pubs free of tie and were debt free. March 2021 - we’ve still got (just) two free of tie sites, but are now £108,000 in debt, all at the Government’s request, as we have had to service our rent obligations and pay our bills & staff.
If pubs, bars and restaurants are not able to open until May then they will have actually been closed for 7 months. With 1 in 5 running out of cash by March even with Govt support that is simply unsustainable https://t.co/ib38BHdc1F via @MailOnline
@UKHospKate We are also closed. Can’t get the numbers to work if we open, so have chosen to lose the smaller amount by staying closed. Haemorrhaging about £450 per week (after grants) on fixed costs and rents. Just wish Ipswich Council could sort the December grants & let us claim...
@UKHospKate & @tomhunt1988 - What’s the plan for Ipswich? Currently low tier risk, but with Essex entering higher restrictions, what plans are there for Ipswich pubs now facing increased risk, with customers getting a short train journey & drinking here instead?
@UKHospKate My thoughts are with our fellow pubs in Essex. Seems mad that customers can have a short 15minute train trip up the line and drink with no restrictions in Suffolk...
This is a frank admission of trade offs - and also an acknowledgement of what has been tacit all along that hospitality is being asked to be part of that trade off - so we need govt support across all tiers to minimise that economic harm and it was not forthcoming
@UKHospKate Mirrors our situation, both here and @AngelWoodbridge when we couldn’t get most team members onto furlough, so paid them at 80% of their average wages for the duration of lockdown as it was “the right thing” to do - cost us, but we considered it “investing in our team”
Oxford Circus last night at 10.10pm.
I had dinner with 2 friends in a socially distanced restaurant- everyone was obeying the rules. Without 10pm curfew we would have ordered desert & more drinks.
You can see why many in hospitality say the curfew isn’t fair and isn’t working
Get it while you can folks. The always excellent @PhilActionJack gigging this afternoon outside at the @DukeIpswich. Nice added bonus - @miserygutzmusic is on percussion. #Ipswich#gigs
Quite a day. A haircut at @JOliversSuffolk and then my first visit to the pub - @DukeIpswich - for three and a half months. Both businesses clearly putting customers’ safety first. I wish them both a hassle-free and profitable future in this new world. Cheers!
