Dr. William Turner, Jr., served as the director of Black Church Affairs at Duke Divinity from 1989-1992. He taught in the areas of theology and Black Church Studies prior to his appointment in homiletics. He is the pastor of Mt. Level Baptist Church in Durham.

Chaplain Matthew A. Zimmerman, Jr. served as the 18th Chief of Chaplains of the Army from 1990 -1994. He was the first African American to hold this position. He was also the first African-American to graduate w/ a master of divinity degree from Duke University.
