'Not all vets identify themselves (esp. women, @USNationalGuard or Reserve members, & noncombat troops). Asking about 'Armed Forces' rather than, 'Are you a veteran?' may have a large impact on the number and accuracy of responses you receive.' https://t.co/8FFILn2wYs
"Whereas academia may view the veteran population as a single entity, it is actually one of great diversity in terms of ethnicity, gender, and physicality/disability." (p.14, https://t.co/ShXIfi5BpR)
75% of people polled in 2013 felt @DukeU should make veteran services a top priority. It was five years after a student veteran took their own life. https://t.co/Rjwk0mJMvs
In every case I could find where a @DukeU student was found dead, @DukeToday & @Dukestuaff released a statement w/in 24 hours. The statement re. Alex Ney came 4 days after, & gave mourners less than 24 hours notice re. memorial. https://t.co/iNpoq1FAlt
A decade after CPT Ney's death, it's not clear if any of the promised changes were implemented, despite 2nd (invitation to self-ID) being a requirement for "Prime Contractors," private entities receiving $150k+/year in federal financial aid (like @dukeu) https://t.co/lc0h4cXbk1
When @iamLoganMI was a student from 2010-2013, his efforts to bring @DukeU up to speed re. OIF/OEF generation were stymied. @Dukestuaff demurred, refusing to act on the promises @DukeToday published in 2009.
But don't believe us, ask VP Moneta for proof; [email protected]
10 months after CPT Ney's death, @duketoday published a story re. @DukeFOOTBALL tailgate party put on by the office of @Dukestuaff. In it, VP Larry Moneta took ownership of "veterans issues"& promised to make these changes @DukeU
@sarahkerm@DukeChronicle Yeah, because a behemoth like @DukeU always handles issues brought thru the proper channels with the utmost of respect...🙄

That foot dragging won’t stop until military communities & families speak up for our own, like CPT Ney.
Help share Alex’s story by retweeting this Moment
Let’s make April 16th the kind of memorial we know that Alex deserves. No more cold, hard stone & empty words #ThisWeDefend
This is Alex Ney. In 2008, he was a third year PhD @dukemedicine working on breast cancer treatment, a program he started not long after getting out of the @USArmy as an artillery officer. On April 16th, he took his own life not far from @DukeU’s East Campus.
Research shows a correlation b/w higher education & lower incidents of suicide. @DukeU prides itself as a top tier university in the American South, where there’s also a high concentration of military & veteran communities
Duke can be a leader, but they’ve dragged their feet
