Horses have the largest eyes of any land mammal (about 5 cm in diameter). Their lateral placement gives them a nearly 360-degree field of vision, with only small blind spots directly in front of the nose and behind the tail. They have dichromatic (two-color) vision, primarily blue and yellow-green, similar to red-green color blindness in humans, and superior night vision thanks to a high rod-to-cone ratio and a reflective tapetum lucidum.
They can doze while standing by using a “stay apparatus” that locks joints in their legs, but they must lie down for at least 30–60 minutes daily to achieve REM sleep. Without a safe place to fully rest, they can become sleep-deprived and experience involuntary collapses.
Horses cannot vomit. A very strong cardiac sphincter, the steep angle where the esophagus enters the stomach, and unidirectional esophageal contractions make reverse flow nearly impossible. This adaptation likely helped wild horses flee predators after eating, but it makes conditions like colic (gut distress) especially dangerous, as pressure can build until the stomach risks rupturing.
Genetic studies indicate the lineage of modern domestic horses was domesticated around 2200 BCE in the lower Volga-Don region of the Pontic-Caspian steppe. This rapidly enabled chariots, expanded mobility, and transformed agriculture, trade, and warfare across Eurasia within a few centuries.Smithsonianmag
The Przewalski’s horse (takhi), native to Central Asian steppes, is the closest living relative of the domestic horse. It has 66 chromosomes (versus 64 in domestic horses), an upright mane without a forelock, and was extinct in the wild by the late 1960s before successful reintroduction programs from captive populations. All living individuals descend from a small number of founders.Nationalgeographic
Additional notes: Typical domestic lifespan is 25–30 years (with a recorded maximum of 62); foals usually stand and nurse within about an hour of birth; and adult horses have roughly 205 bones (one fewer than humans in most cases).
“The cake is really nice and yummy, the taste was 100%, and the whipped cream was so on point. But you need to improve on your writing.” 😂
😂😂😭 My customer said it, not me.The taste and whipped cream passed the test, but my writing needs divine intervention. 😭😂.
Horses have almost 360-degree vision
Their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads, allowing them to see almost all around themselves. However, they have blind spots directly in front of their noses and directly behind their bodies.
Gasland got tired of updating the price of gas on their LED display so how am I supposed to know the price of gas now without needing to walk in first? I need to fill gas tomorrow morning
