In my scene for NES Tetris, we did the opposite and doubled down on the controller the game was designed for. Instead of our players using better weapons to do things that weren't possible, they BECAME the weapons and devised skills and movement techniques that defined the evolution of our game. We never have an asterisk because what happens is always a demonstration of skill on an equal playing field down to the controller. We had been pressured to allow keyboard for "accessibility" to accommodate emulator players but we kept our resolve. We dodged a huge bullet with that, and enabled the growth of skill with a mythos that retains competitive authenticity going back 35+ years and encourages new generations of players to push it even further. I had always wished to see the same thing for the arcade Street Fighters since I loved those games, but I think its too late as too many people want to use their fancy expensive weapon to win.
