Instead of driving your car, a new council will be established to make sure residents use more public transportation

Massachusetts approved a millionaire tax of an extra 4% of income above $1 million in 2022. This is in addition to the 5% state income tax everyone pays. So the wealthy in that state pay 9% on top of their federal income taxes of 37%.

As a result, they are moving to New Hampshire, Florida and other states with no state income taxes

Sam Altman said people saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT costs OpenAI tens of millions of dollars a year in compute. 67% of Americans do it anyway.

Run the math on why.

A 2024 Waseda University study tested LLM responses across politeness levels in English, Chinese, and Japanese. Impolite prompts produced measurably worse outputs: more bias, more errors, more refusals. Moderate politeness consistently beat both extremes.

The mechanism makes sense once you see it. Polite prompts pattern-match to higher-quality training data. When you write “Could you help me structure this analysis?”, the model pulls from professional, well-reasoned text. When you write “give me the answer,” it pulls from Reddit.

Google DeepMind’s Murray Shanahan explained it simply: the model is role-playing a smart intern. Treat the intern like a colleague, you get colleague-quality work. Bark orders, you get minimum-viable compliance.

Now look at the cost side. OpenAI handles over a billion queries daily. Each GPT-4 query uses roughly 2.9 watt-hours, ten times a Google search. But OpenAI just raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation. Tens of millions in politeness tokens is a rounding error on a rounding error.

67% of users do it anyway, and 55% of them say it’s because it’s “the right thing to do.” They’re maintaining a behavioral habit that governs every other interaction in their life. The parent who teaches their kid to say please to Alexa isn’t doing it for Alexa. They’re doing it because the alternative is raising someone who learns that being rude gets faster results.

Telling 900 million people to stop saying thank you so OpenAI can save 0.01% of operating costs is the most engineer-brained optimization take on the internet. You’re training yourself to treat every interaction as a transaction. And that habit doesn’t stay in the chat window.

Cities like Seattle say they want grocery stores.

But they also want soft-on-crime policies.

“We can’t put people in jail for stealing groceries.”

Word spreads fast.

Soon everyone knows
you can steal from the grocery store.

So the store hires security.

Costs go up.

Margins shrink.

Then government piles on even more costs.

Higher property taxes.
Mandatory retirement contributions.
Higher minimum wages.
More regulations.
More overhead.

And more theft.

Eventually the store can’t stay profitable.

So it closes.

Then politicians blame the
“evil capitalists” who opened the store.

Government policies create the food desert.

Then government says:

“We need a government grocery store.”

Who funds it?

Taxpayers.

Then taxpayers move to states
where they don’t allow stealing from the grocery store.

Now there’s:

No grocery store.
Fewer jobs.
Less tax revenue.

And politicians blame…

Capitalism.

When government really only does three things:

Print money.
Tax people.
Spend other people’s money.

Printing money transfers wealth
from the poor and middle class
to the government.

Taxes transfer wealth
from the middle class
to the government.

And excessive government spending creates inflation for everyone
which disproportionately hurts the poor and middle class.

The cycle repeats...

Then politicians demand more power
and more taxes
to fix the problems they created.

In Minnesota, when an ineligible voter applies for a driver's license (yes, undocumented immigrants are issued driver's licenses), they are automatically added to the voter rolls. The state then sends a letter stating that if the newly registered voter does not have permission to vote in Minnesota or shouldn't have been added to the voter registry, they can request removal from the voter rolls by sending a written request to the State.

If you've never covered the military, or served, or if you don't have any family or friends in the military this would seem like a shocking story.

But it's not--not even remotely.

It is a common practice for our country to provide these special meals to our service men and women at least once a week--Has been for decades.

I did my due diligence to prove my point to anyone who doubts my accuracy -- in 2009 when Robert Gates was the secretary defense during the Obama administration I present you with a story from a reporter who was embedded with the soldiers in Afghanistan.

"The lobsters and crab legs are shipped from the United States and driven down on a refrigerated truck from Bagram.
On seafood night, the crew serves up 400 of the tasty tails, 130 pounds of Alaskan King crab legs, and 135 pounds each of shrimp and scallops."

I am once again disappointed with the lack of balance and context in my profession. Deeply embarrassed and disappointed in members of Congress, who were tweeting this out. Why? Well because how is it that they don't know this? 

You may or may not like who is the current president of the United States, but your obsession should not make something that is both a norm but also a show of gratefulness for our soldiers, an outrage to satisfy your unhappiness.
