#DRC: Are the decisions being made by President Félix Tshisekedi’s government accelerating the fragmentation of the DRC that has already begun?
Kinshasa has suspended the activities of public universities and higher education institutions located in areas controlled by AFC/M23. Students’ diplomas may no longer be recognized, teachers will no longer be paid, and some have reportedly already been removed from the list of employees.
It has been almost two years since banks were closed in some of these areas. Now, education is also being suspended, and the consequences are being imposed on a population that had no role in this crisis.
Yet, those who fled Goma and Bukavu in the face of AFC/M23 were the police, the national army, the FDLR, the Wazalendo, and mercenaries. But unfortunately, it is the ordinary population that is paying the price for the consequences of this situation.
Education should never be mixed with political conflicts or war. Students and teachers should not be punished for a situation they neither chose nor played any role in creating. These hasty decisions could force the two Kivu provinces to become independent.
“We have not encountered any serious problems by making it easy for people to cross our border in or out. What we have discovered are only benefits.”
