As many of you may know, a family in the Elkhorn School District recently posted a large billboard in their yard near our neighborhood which personally attacked me while supporting a non-incumbent candidate for Elkhorn School Board.

My initial reaction was to reserve any response regarding this issue, not wanting to dignify such inappropriate actions with any emotional or intellectual capital. However, I have received an outpouring of support from community members, both friends and strangers, from all over the District, many urging me to provide some context regarding this false public attack. That, combined with the impact it has now had on my three children having to drive by the billboard and answer questions from their classmates, has compelled me to respond.

Out of respect to that family (a courtesy they did not extend to me), I will obviously not publicly mention their names. This is an outgrowth of a decision that was made, collectively, by the School Board policy committee that the family did not agree with. The committee’s decision was simply to uphold the administration’s prior determination not to grant the family’s request for an exception to an Elkhorn Public Schools policy. The committee’s decision was informed by the input of the administration and relevant District staff.

To be clear, to assert that that the committee’s decision was, in some way, based on a lack of care for this family’s child is disingenuous and contrary to the communications between the committee and the family. I stand by the decisions that we have made as a Board, and I would ask anyone that has questions on this or any other issue to reach out – I am more than willing to discuss.

I have volunteered countless hours over the last 4 years in service to the District. Why? Because I do care about educational outcomes for all of the 11,000+ students in this district. The fact is that, as Elkhorn School Board Members, we are sometimes asked to make challenging decisions that directly impact families, but those decisions must always be grounded in a balance of equities across all of the schools, students, teachers and staff of the District.

I am extremely proud of the collaborative work done by the entire Board in playing our small part in ensuring that the Elkhorn Public Schools remain the example public school district for the State of Nebraska.

I will end by mentioning that, in the practice of law, there is a joke that goes, “If you have the facts on your side, pound the facts; If you have the law on your side, pound the law; when you don’t have the facts and you don’t have the law, pound the table.” The same can be said of political campaigns. Louder rarely, if ever, means better.

I urge everyone to do their due diligence when deciding who to support in this and every upcoming election – it is more important than ever to be an informed voter and not be influenced by misinformation.
