Hello Science Twitter! My name is Jared Dyer and I'm an Entomology MS student @virginia_tech studying the foraging ecology of samurai wasps! I'm also a writer and run a zoology blog, https://t.co/zR7JsysnnQ. I've lurked for months and I'm ready to be more active!

A bit of nuance for your Friday!
Spotted lanternflies were introduced into the US. New as they are, they can spread unchecked threatening native flora and fauna.
In this context we consider them invasive. Insects "become invasive" according to the context.
After collecting dead bugs my whole life I finally did something with them! The cicada killer wasp was found in eastern Massachusetts this week while doing field work, the cicada however has been tucked away in my collection for 15 years waiting to be “killed”
A grower brought us three late-instar cecropia moth caterpillars that had taken residence in his nursery. They'll be spinning their cocoons soon, so maybe we'll get some beautiful full grown adults next summer.
A lot has changed since I took a hiatus from social media. I finished grad school, got a new job, moved to a new state, won an award, and became a cat dad! But now I'm excited to begin a new chapter of life and resume some long neglected projects.

I am so deeply saddened to share that on of my PhD advisors & long time friend E.O. Wilson passed away yesterday. He was truly an inspiration & had such a prolific and important scientific career. Thank you for being my advocate, hero, & friend. You will be deeply missed Ed.
Over a week ago I successfully defended my thesis! This photo was taken the day after the actual defense because I forgot to do it earlier. I promise I was better dressed the day before.
Time to change my email signature.
Wasps, Hymenoptera. Incredible in shape, color, size and, above all, reproductive strategies. With around 160,000 described species, they form one of the four mega-diverse insect orders.

On the 400th anniversary of what is called the ‘First Thanksgiving,’ I want to highlight a project that has changed my and many other Wampanoag people’s lives
Here’s a 🧵 on how a Wampanoag woman, jessie little doe baird, brought our language back from near extinction (1/25):
Congratulations to our entomology graduate students who performed exceptionally well at the Entomological Society of America's national conference last week!
I'm so glad I was able to attend at least one in-person national conference while in grad school. My talk and debate went wonderfully and met many cool people in the process. My only regret about #Entsoc21 is that I didn't take more pictures while in Denver.
THE WAY I JUST SCREAMED!!!!!
Y’all!!!! I’ve only ever seen ONE other Black person in a curator position in animal care! I HAVE GOOSEBUMPS!!!
The way simply KNOWING this man exists makes all the difference?!? I hope I can meet Craig one day!!!!!
