NEWS There is now a broad-based acceleration in U.S. business activity, the highest in five years and it’s not just a manufacturing bounce. U.S. manufacturing PMI expanded sharply and unexpectedly to 57.0 vs 53.6 estimated. This is the strongest manufacturing reading in roughly five years. And services sector activity jumped unexpectedly this month too, to 58.7 vs 56.0 estimate, according to S&P Global. That’s a 59-month high, also the highest in nearly five years.

Services are the largest part of the U.S. economy, so this is particularly significant.

Composite PMI at 58.4 combining manufacturing and services is the strongest U.S. business-activity reading in more than five years.

The numbers indicate that demand and output are accelerating across both goods-producing and service businesses, rather than the economy being carried by one sector.

For anybody outside Ohio: Acton was the face of Ohio's COVID lockdown. March 12, 2020, she said "the math is over 100,000" Ohioans infected. Ohio had five confirmed cases. Next day: "I'm saying I'm guesstimating." Schools closed on that number, first in the country. Two Ohio judges ruled her orders unlawful or beyond her authority. The legislature stripped the health director's emergency powers over DeWine's veto. She quit in June 2020. Now she's running for governor and won't take questions about any of it.
