Last week my belief in this great country was first truly shattered. Although Tuesday felt like a repeat, this time we had the privilege of hindsight, yet still fell for the same hubris and false promises. In doing so we turned our back on the ideals that make America special, and instead embraced so much of what I thought we stood above.
Maybe I’m naive and there is nothing great about this country. Still I have to believe this is not who we are.
Every Veterans Day, I am reminded of the heroism and self-sacrifice of our servicemen and women, past and present. Their legacies show that the continuation of freedom, even the nation itself, is never a given. It is something that always needs to be defended and fought for.
From our nation’s start—born out of a rebellion against tyranny, to our Civil War fought for the eradication of slavery, to WWII and our choice to leave geographic isolation and save a world from an axis of darkness and evil—when freedom called, we always rose to the occasion.
The decision to fully commit to the cause was never easy, and many gave everything to these struggles, including their lives. Never was the outcome self evident, nor was there ever a clear consensus on what side to take. Still, when our darkest days came, we always proved as a nation more righteous than reluctant and that took great courage & foresight, and took for thous who died, the greatest sacrifice.
Happy Veterans Day. Thanks to you, in our relatively brief history, though we have lost many battles, never have we lost the war. Today, I take solace in your example, and look forward to doing everything I can to continue our freedom struggle—
Thank you freedom fighters past and present, for making sure that in our darkest hour, when light finally comes, our flag will still be there.💙🇺🇸
