@DorianCast & I do agree that the word “trauma” is overused but as a trauma therapist/trauma consultant, I think there is much to consider and evaluate to fully realize the impact of behaviors and traditions including these types of consequences/punishments.

@DorianCast A medical def of trauma (which I personally prefer) is that trauma isn’t the event but what happens in your body/nervous system during the event. If that’s true (& I believe it is), then what happens when people (namely children) are whooped would definitely qualify as trauma.

@DorianCast 2 of the three men in the conversation retelling their stories of being whooped until they peed on themselves (as if that is normal) proved my point that it IS IN FACT traumatizing! Sad part is that I have heard (& seen that) too many times. It LITERALLY brings tears to my eyes!

I’ve heard a lot of traumatic experiences as a therapist- few worse than an 8yo excitedly telling you about the great hiding place she found during the active shooter drill at her school and how no one would find her because she covered herself with the stuffies.
