Every time.

The method: Decompose + Bound + Sanity check.

DECOMPOSE
Break the unknown into knowns.
"How much concrete is in the Hoover Dam?"
→ Volume = length × width × average thickness
→ Estimate each from what you know (dam is ~200m tall, ~400m long at base...)

BOUND
Give a lower and upper limit before you estimate the middle.
"It's definitely more than X, definitely less than Y."
Narrows your answer before you start.

SANITY CHECK
Does your answer make sense at human scale?
If your estimate says the dam uses more concrete than exists on Earth, then something's wrong.

Hoover Dam actual concrete: 3.3 million cubic yards (2.5 million cubic meters).
Good envelope estimate: 2–5 million. Close enough to make decisions.

Practice this daily:
• How many flights land in the US per day?
• How much fuel does a 747 burn per passenger per km?
• How many engineers work at Boeing?

Estimate first. Check second. The gap teaches you more than the answer.
