The Children of Llullaillaco comprise a trio of Inca child mummies, believed to have been sacrificed in a religious ritual around the year 1500. During this ceremony, the children were administered coca and alcohol, after which they were placed inside a small chamber buried 1.5 meters (5 ft) underground, where they met their fate.

Remarkably preserved, these mummies were unearthed on March 16th, 1999, by Johan Reinhard and his archaeological team near the summit of Llullaillaco, located on the border between Argentina and Chile. Reinhard described them as the finest examples of Inca mummies ever discovered, noting that their arms were perfectly conserved, down to each individual hair. Astonishingly, their internal organs remained intact, and one of the hearts even contained frozen blood. Due to the freezing conditions before dehydration could set in, the typical desiccation and shrinking of organs found in exposed human remains did not occur.
