The career of Walasse Ting 丁雄泉, an unclassifiable, Shanghai-born artist who worked in Paris, New York and Amsterdam respectively, prefigures the globalisation of contemporary Chinese art.

In the early 1950s, Walasse Ting went to Paris, where his expressive works brought him in contact with the COBRA group. During his time in Paris, he became interested in the work of Matisse, but it was in New York that he forged his own style, working with both ink and pure colour, drawing on the conventions of Chinese painting and the spontaneity of action painting. This book retraces the life and career of Ting, and presents for the first time the exceptional collection of the Cernuschi Museum. It reveals the incredible vitality of Ting’s oeuvre, which is steeped in eroticism, as well as the fascinating figure of an artist who gave himself the symbolic name of “flower thief” 采花大盗.

Liu Ye 刘野’s Specially For You (Olympic 2008) (Pic 4)was commissioned for a special charity event in honour of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. An iconic image, the present composition appears in editioned prints（Olympic Girl 奥林匹克女孩）(pic 1) by the artist, which feature the exact same vision of a colorful gridded background and a chubby-cheeked girl, with the five colored balls in the young protagonist’s hairpiece representing the colored rings of the Olympic symbol. The cheerfully choreographed composition straddles figuration and geometric abstraction, realism and post-modern appropriation, manifesting as a superlative paradigm from Liu Ye’s oeuvre.

In fantastical paintings populated with heightened, hysterical self-portraits, Yue Minjun 岳敏君 satirizes contemporary society and art historical tropes. Yue paints himself in fluorescent hues with a gaping grin. He occasionally multiplies his likeness, making his compositions even more menacing; his style has made him a pioneer of China’s Cynical Realism movement. Yue’s influences include Chinese socialist realism, Surrealism, and European classical paintings. The combination of humor and serious cultural commentary is characteristic of Mitsuru watanabe 渡部满 ’s painting. He notes that this too is based on an older Japanese trope, Honka-dori, in which new tanka poetry is created by quoting from famous older tanka poems. Mitsuru has used iconic western paintings coupled with very contemporary Japanese images to initiate a discussion about the cross-cultural influences of each tradition.
