I've been raising silkworm caterpillars for fun (and craving to touch a bug in this long isolated winter). I've been raising them on artificial diet, since the mulberry trees are still dormant until spring, and I'm pleased to say they're getting very big and fat.

More big babies are preparing to metamorphose so I can't clean the enclosure the same way I would normally, so please pardon the frass!
The second batch is going strong-- I'll try to get some microscope pictures of them over the weekend.

More sketches for my @NHI101x course: A line drawing study of forsythia flowers and a value drawing of a leaf to display understanding of structure.
It's still pretty early spring here, though, and we just had another bout of snow over the weekend, so all I could find were these!

@abinMain On one hand I could see myself trading for a single 114mm caterpillar but on the other.... Babies

@abinMain Little ones are going strong still! A couple more have finished their cocoons and the four or five remaining from the first batch are getting ready. It turns out the second batch is 114 caterpillars, so I have to make sure I order more diet before I run out 😅

@Pachira_jp Did you do anything with the silk?? I keep thinking I will leave them alone and let them emerge safely rather than boil them to release the threads.

This week for @NHI101x We were tasked with doing drawings in a field journal! My partner and I took a day trip to the zoo to satisfy my need to draw some animals. I have a lot to learn about working in color for scanning, but I think they came out really well!

These head capsules are getting big now!! Here's also the first photo of the Very Populated second hatching! I'm collecting the larger head capsules as they shed to draw under a microscope later :9

So many of the second batch have hatched and are eating voraciously!! I think I'm gonna need a bigger container than this for the new babies
