The EAC @jumuiya has launched inter-state technical engagements in Dar es Salaam to finalize a harmonized Regional Mobile Roaming Framework, a strategic initiative designed to eliminate cross-border communication tariffs and establish seamless regional connectivity.

While high roaming fees remain an operational bottleneck for merchants, logistics operators, and enterprises across East Africa, affordable communications are vital to unlock the full potential of trade, tourism, and labor mobility.

Opening the high-level session, EAC Deputy Secretary General Hon. Andrea Ariik Malueth (@AguerAriik) emphasized that digital infrastructure serves as a primary engine for economic transformation and regional integration.

“Cross-border traders, transport operators, tourists and businesses depend heavily on reliable mobile communication services. By advancing a harmonised regional roaming framework, the EAC is addressing one of the practical barriers that continue to affect movement, trade and socio-economic interaction within the Community,” stated Hon. Ariik.

The upcoming framework will standardize affordable cross-border voice, SMS, and data platforms, directly accelerating the EAC Single Digital Market vision and driving broad-spectrum digital inclusion. @EARDIP_EAC

The EAC has today officially announced the upcoming 2026 EAC Regional Quality
Awards set to fete outstanding enterprises across the region that demonstrate
excellence in quality management, standards compliance, innovation and continuous improvement.

The Awards seek to promote a strong culture of quality among East African
enterprises, enhance the competitiveness of locally produced goods and services,
facilitate regional trade, and support deeper regional integration.
