Most people don’t realize that every mile they drive today traces its name back to the marching boots of ancient Rome.

This column marks the beginning of the Via Appia, one of the Roman Empire’s most famous roads, built more than 2,000 years ago. From this point, Roman surveyors measured distances in mille passus, or “a thousand paces.” One pace was a soldier’s double step, making a Roman mile roughly 5,000 feet (1,524 m).

Centuries later, England adopted the concept but standardized the mile at 5,280 feet (1,609 m). The measurement changed, but the name endured.

Every time you see a mile marker on the side of the road, you’re looking at a legacy of Roman engineering and military precision that has survived for more than two millennia.

The United States is rapidly draining its emergency oil stockpile, bringing it close to levels not seen in over four decades.

According to the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration data, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) currently holds approximately 365 million barrels, a drop of more than 50 million barrels since the Israel-Iran conflict began in late February. At the current rate of release, the reserve could soon reach its lowest point since 1983.

Established after the 1973 oil crisis, the SPR serves as the nation’s primary defense against major energy supply disruptions. The oil is stored in massive underground salt caverns along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. In times of crisis or soaring prices, the government can release this stockpile to stabilize markets and protect the economy.

In March, the U.S. participated in a coordinated international effort with other International Energy Agency members, releasing hundreds of millions of barrels from global emergency reserves. The objective was to counteract potential supply shocks from the Middle East conflict and prevent fuel prices from spiraling out of control.

The strategy appears to have succeeded. While some analysts had warned that oil prices could surge as high as $150 per barrel, the releases helped keep prices significantly lower.

However, the drawdown carries risks. As reserves decline, concerns are rising about the nation’s preparedness for future emergencies. Falling below certain thresholds could limit operational flexibility and complicate responses to major supply disruptions.

Although the SPR remains one of the world’s largest emergency oil reserves, its rapid depletion has sparked renewed debate over when and how it should be replenished — a discussion likely to shape U.S. energy policy in the years ahead.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian not only wants a ceasefire, he wants an end to the war.

I understand the pretext given was that we could not negotiate a new nuclear deal.

Their nuclear facility was taken out by Israel. The war should end, and it can end today.
