An Essex County jury has convicted former East Orange Police Officer Devin Higgs of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child for physically abusing his then 9-year-old son. Higgs faces up to 80 years in prison.

Assistant Prosecutor Will Chalmers participated in a Celebrity Reading at Florence Ave. Elementary School in Irvington.
Forty volunteers, including Chalmers, left in below photo, gathered to read to the students. Celebrity Read encourages children to develop the habit of reading.
During its Black History Month Celebration, ECPO honored nine individuals, including Jeh Johnson, former Secretary of Homeland Security.
"It's important to celebrate the rich contributions that African Americans have made to the greatness of America," said Prosecutor Stephens.
ECPO will host its annual celebration of Black History Month on Feb. 28, 5:30 p.m., on the 14th floor of the Leroy Smith Building.
The keynote speaker is the Honorable Jeh Johnson, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017). Nine other honorees will be recognized.
Essex County will host its African American History Month Celebration Feb. 22. in the MLK Justice Building.
Raheem Morris, Irvington resident and coach of the Atlanta Falcons, will receive the MLK Leadership Award. A field in Vailsburg Park will also be named after Morris.
High school juniors from Essex County can apply to our Summer Internship Program. The 4-week internship is a mix of workshops, guest speakers, and class trips. Students will learn about law enforcement, law, and government.

Theodore N. Stephens, II was sworn in Friday to serve a 5-year term as Essex County Prosecutor.

Our office is investigating the fatal shooting of Tyquane Steed, 29, of Howell Township.
On Feb. 13, police responded to a shooting on South 16th St. in Newark. Officers located Steed inside a residence with a fatal gunshot wound. Anyone with info please call 1-877-TIPS-4EC.

ECPO is investigating a hit and run collision that left a pedestrian seriously injured.

A jury has convicted Ryan Mwangi, 31, of Newark, of murder for fatally shooting Kenneth Thomas.
In May of 2019, Thomas, 31, of Newark, was shot while sitting in his car on Renner Avenue in Newark. He suffered eight gunshot wounds. Read the story here: https://t.co/WwC1itLFy9
The ECPO is investigating the fatal shooting of Nasir Dudley, 20, of Newark.
