Under cover of fog, Colonel John Glover and his Marblehead mariners evacuate General Washington's army of 9,000 men from Long Island to the relative safety of Manhattan.

The fog is thought to have saved the army from total annihalation, as the British gunners could not see the Americans through it.

Stark Reality: Germans Are Blitzed
16 August 1777, Walloomsac, New York (Battle of Bennington). As British General John Burgoyne’s Saratoga Campaign faltered, he dispatched Lt. Col. Friedrich Baum with about 700 dismounted Brunswick dragoons, Canadians, Loyalists, and Indians to seize supplies and horses at Bennington. Alerted to the threat, Brig. Gen. John Stark rallied roughly 2,000 New Hampshire and Massachusetts militia. Reinforced by Col. Seth Warner’s Green Mountain Rangers, Stark’s force struck on August 16. After heavy rain delayed the action, Stark’s men enveloped Baum’s hilltop position in fierce fighting. Baum was mortally wounded; hundreds of his troops were killed or captured. When German reinforcements under Lt. Col. Heinrich von Breymann arrived, Warner’s timely counterattack drove them off with heavy losses. The stunning Patriot victory deprived Burgoyne of critical supplies and Indian allies, boosted American morale, and helped set the stage for the decisive Saratoga campaign. #History #AmRev #RevWar #RevWarTales

In a fury, an angry mob decapitated the statue, tore off the nose, and mounted the remainders of the heads on spikes.
