Walking Together Against Elder Abuse in Musina💜
Today in Musina, Limpopo Province, the Department of Social Development, together with the Limpopo Provincial Government, is participating in a fun walk with older persons to highlight the plight of elder abuse ahead of an engagement with older persons as part of the commemoration of this day in Musina.
The challenges faced by older persons include emotional, financial and psychological abuse, often perpetrated by family members, particularly grandchildren. This initiative is intended to provide older persons with an opportunity to voice their concerns and share their experiences.
The Department aims to encourage all members of the community to support, promote and protect older persons, who are the custodians of wisdom, knowledge and values within our communities.

Child Protection Register data paints a sobering picture of the realities facing children in South Africa. During the 2025/26 financial year, a total of 27,115 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported. Deliberate neglect accounted for the highest number of cases (10,552), followed by 9,274 cases of sexual abuse, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen child protection systems and community vigilance.
Every statistic represents a child whose safety, dignity and future have been threatened. Protecting children is not a once-off campaign—it is a 365-day responsibility shared by families, communities, schools, faith-based organisations and government.

"Senzeni na? South Africa, asilazi ityala, Nkosi yami. Bayasibulala, thina... Nkosi yami." These moving words echoed through the hall of High Impact Family Church in Ezibeleni, Komani as children raised their voices in a powerful plea for protection and justice.
Ahead of the Child Protection Month Closing Ceremony, Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mr Ganief Hendricks, Eastern Cape MEC for Social Development, Ms Bukiwe Fanta, and partners visited the church to engage congregants and raise awareness on the protection of children. Government called on religious leaders to work hand in hand with communities and stakeholders to ensure that churches remain safe spaces where children are nurtured, protected and empowered. The emotional performance served as a stark reminder that child abuse remains a reality in many communities and that protecting children is a shared responsibility that extends beyond homes and schools to every space where children live, learn and worship.
