On this day in 2013, The Weeknd released his debut studio album ‘KISS LAND’ 🈯️
Describing ‘Kiss Land’ as a metaphorical, terrifying, and unfamiliar place post-‘Trilogy’ fame, Abel was inspired by horror filmmakers like John Carpenter and David Cronenberg when putting together the album.
The album’s backdrop of Japan served as the perfect place to feed into Abel’s feelings of unfamiliarity, calling it an “honest fear” in a 2013 MTV documentary. At the time, Japan represented the furthest place he had traveled to outside of his hometown of Toronto—channeling these emotions sonically and thematically into the album.
It featured tracks such as “Wanderlust,” “Live For” featuring Drake and its title track “Kiss Land.” 13 years later, what ‘KISS LAND’ tracks are you still listening to?
