@wendyparciak Quite possibly! But: *did* you actually put it in the first paragraph? Did you include a cool hook? Did you have a stakes paragraph that sold that, too? The idea isn't enough, I think. There's still some artistry to how you write the query itself.

@DelilahSDawson I had luck for a while with a bacon-flavored paste and adhered the pills to the treats. She loved it for a while until she realized that bacon smell = pill, and now she's too smart to fall for it anymore. Just take your pills, kitty, you need them. :(

@TheLincoln I never understood this. Writers create books. If someone doesn't enjoy reading books, why would they want to create them? If you don't enjoy looking at words, why decide to write tens of thousands of them?

@_TallieRose Thoughts are great! That's a matter of taste and style. Ideally, a beta should be able to articulate the difference between "this choice might impact the story for XYZ reasons" and "I don't like to read this kind of story".

@RossAhmed9 The problem is that it's not always something horrible. Sometimes the book is just *good* but not *WOW*. Sometimes they don't have any idea how to sell this book right now. It's not a given that they *hated* anything. It still *absolutely* sucks to get, because what can you do?

@ellle_em Agreed. This sort of joke is wrongheaded and hurtful. Cats love company! Ours follow us from room to room, beg for pets, and check in on us whenever we go anywhere. I have no idea how anyone thinks cats are antisocial.

@PushinUpRoses You will be absolutely fine! Just give her the time and space to get comfortable. I had a shy cat who took six months (!!!) to fully warm up to us. I spent so much time worrying whether I had secretly been a bad cat owner despite having them my whole life. It takes time!

@stdennard It was what got me (more) into writing! I was on roleplaying games where we'd spend 30+ minutes writing absurdly long, multi-paragraph poses. Eventually it's just disjointed, half-readable, joint-written fanfiction.

petition to replace the phrase "strong female character" with "complex female characters" so people don't just give bland, empty female characters swords and 1-2 lines about about they "don't need to be rescued" or "won't be silenced" and call it a day.

@AmandaDErrico1 500 seems too long--~250 is short and sweet! I wouldn't add writing clubs/hobbies/personal details unless they are directly relevant to the book (i.e., it's an ownvoices story or whatever). If you really have no creds, just leave them out.

@stdennard I can imagine! And a common tactic for high-level people in low-level dungeons is to sprint, pull everything, and have the healer heal through it, which... only works if you are, in fact, also overgeared. Nice people slow down when they realize this, though. :(
